The courtyard is a series of spaces and outdoor rooms which are divided by pockets of vegetation, creating diverse seating areas. A large lawn area is surrounding by custom designed seating elements which also function as a retaining structures, allowing for more intimate seating and contemplation areas.
GHDWoodhead were commissioned by Deakin University to design a new outdoor space which would act as a recreational hub for students using Building HD and also crossing the new cross-campus bridge which spans Gardiners Creek.
The design brief requested clear, legible circulation, with intuitive wayfinding, and strong visual permeability to and across Gardiners Creek. In line with the high percentage of mobile students, the brief also requested a series of event points within the landscape, to allow for a seamless transition between in-door and out-door wifi connections and charging points, to aid the use of the area as an outdoor study and café hub.
